Amilla Maldives Resort Transforms into Neverland for Easter

Island ‘where dreams are born, and time is never planned’ conjures up Peter Pan-themed festivities

This Easter, sun-seekers are being invited to think of happy things, and your heart will fly on wings’ all the way to Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences. The playful five-star resort is transforming into Neverland from March 29th to April 5th for youngsters - and the young at heart. With hectares of jungle, treehouses, a glittering lagoon and a mysterious ‘Blue Hole’, there couldn’t be a more appropriate Neverland location than this timeless island paradise.

After a challenging year for all, Amilla’s ‘Islanders’ recognised travellers are hungry for fun and escapism in 2021. So they have dreamed up Peter Pan-themed Easter celebrations brimming with surprises, excitement - and a sprinkling of fairy dust too.

Since the innovative resort team likes to think outside the box, they’ve come up with a unique twist on J M Barrie’s classic tale. It cleverly weaves in the timely themes of regeneration, rebirth, hope, sustainability and ‘coming together’, which will be showcased through a variety of performances, activities and special events for all ages.

‘Peter Pan – Regeneration’ will be a ‘festival of hope’, according to the Islanders. Highlights will include shows and storytelling by Peter and Wendy (aka Des and Zoie; the in-house ‘Area 51 Performers’) involving staff and guests. A treasure hunt, Easter egg hunt and crafting workshops presided over by a (reformed) Captain Hook will help keep the little ones entertained.

On Easter Saturday, kids can get involved in creating a sustainability-themed fashion show. It will focus on ‘fashion for a brighter future’, showcasing the benefits (and cool factor) of using recycled and sustainable materials. Inspired by the four elements, the kids will also fly kites made from recycles paper and plastic down the runway. Magic shows, pirate circus skills, stilt-walking and acrobatics will add even more excitement during the interludes.

Easter Sunday will be celebrated with cocktails and a gala dinner by the main pool while aerial silk performers weave shapes through the coconut trees.

Then on Easter Monday, the entire afternoon will be dedicated to water-based races, games and poolside dancing with prizes at ‘Captain Hook’s Grand Splashional’. ‘Kids’ of all ages can compete in an underwater treasure hunt. It will be followed by a Flamingo Parade of (waterproof) Easter bonnets made by the kids. The under-fives will be transported around the pool on inflatable unicorns and seahorses. There will also be circus skills workshops and an island-wide Easter egg hunt, led by Peter Pan.

Amilla Maldives’ ‘Cracking’ Ministry of Crab Collaboration

Five-star resort teams up with one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants for Easter pop-up experience

Amilla Maldives Resort and Residences is announcing a ‘cracking’ new collaboration with the Ministry of Crab. The partnership with the acclaimed Sri Lankan restaurant brand will see a pop-up Ministry of Crab taking over Wok Restaurant at Amilla for the Easter holidays (from April 1st-14th). With a flagship restaurant at Colombo’s Dutch Hospital upscale shopping precinct, the Ministry of Crab (MoC) also has international outposts in Shanghai, Manilla, Mumbai, Bangkok  and at Crossroads Maldives.

Championing the seafood of the Maldives’ next-door neighbour,  the Ministry of Crab’s modus operandi is using fresh quality ingredients (with a daring no-freezer policy) to create delicious fine dining cuisine. In particular, the MoC has elevated indigenous wild-caught mud crab to unparalleled levels. Aficionados frequently refer to the MoC’s mud crab dishes as ‘the best crab in the world’.

Guests can choose whether to have their crab prepared with chilli, pepper, garlic-chilli, butter or traditional Sri Lankan curry. The crabs range in size from half a kilo to the legendary 2kg ‘Crabzilla’. But the MoC also excels at many other seafood dishes, including crab liver pate, garlic-chilli freshwater prawns and much more.

As one of South Asia’s most famous chefs, Chef-Restauranteur Dharshan Munidasa’s pop-up Ministry of Crab at Amilla Maldives will be one of the highlights of its thrilling Easter programme. Amilla’s Easter festivities for guests of all ages will also include magical Neverland-themed entertainment and activities that celebrate the concepts of togetherness, resilience and sustainability. As an advocate of fresh, local ingredients, Dharshan is an excellent fit for Amilla’s key sustainability philosophy.

Dharshan, who was born in Tokyo to a Japanese mother and Sri Lankan father, is also the mastermind behind Sri Lanka’s famous Nihonbashi restaurant. He discovered his talent for cooking while studying at John Hopkins University in the USA, where he obtained a double degree in Computer Engineering and International Relations. Dharshan opened Nihonbashi in Colombo to great acclaim in 1995 and Ministry of Crab in partnership with celebrated Sri Lankan cricketers, Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara, in 2011.

The prolific restauranteur then opened The Tuna and The Crab Japanese seafood fusion restaurant in historic Galle in 2014 and followed up this success with Karma Sutra contemporary Sri Lankan restaurant, which he opened with Bollywood actress, Jacqueline Fernandez, in 2017. In addition, Dharshan launched a Café Nihonbashi in Sri Lanka’s ancient former capital, Kandy, in 2018, and Ministry of Crab, Carne Diem Grill and Nihonbashi Blue at Crossroads Maldives in 2020.

Amilla’s General Manager, Jason Kruse, and Executive Chef, Andrew Smith, say they are thrilled that Dharshan will shortly be bringing his signature dishes and sharing his freshness philosophy with Sri Lankan spice and personality with the Baa Atoll resort. ”Ministry of Crab is an iconic brand which will provide additional dining options for our Easter period guests,” says Jason.
