DISCOVER JAVVU SPA’S ‘DHIVEHI BEYS’
As we continue to keep the health of guests as our top priority, Amilla’s Javvu Spa is divulging some of the healing secrets of Maldivian traditional medicine.
Known as ‘Dhivehi Beys’, these natural remedies have been developed over the centuries. ‘Dhivehi’ means ‘Maldivian’ and ‘beys’ means ‘medicine’. This ancient knowledge was passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation.
Nowadays, there are only a few traditional healers in the Maldives. However, Dhivehi Beys treatments are still popular amongst the local population. Many Maldivians would even travel far across the atolls for treatments.
So, with the support of a local Dhivehi Beys healer (who is well known in the Maldives) our Javvu Spa team has developed two amazing new treatments. They are inspired by these local healing traditions and integrated with modern spa techniques.
Herbs Picked on the Island
In line with our Homemade@Amilla and Homegrown@Amilla sustainability and wellness programmes, this exciting new project utilizes indigenous Maldivian spices and herbs. We grow them in our very own organic gardens. They include ‘thamburu’, ‘fonithoshi’ and ‘karanfoo’, which help enhance deeply restorative and healing treatments.
‘Thamburu Beys Dhemun’
The 50-minute ‘Thamburu Beys Dhemun’ treatment combines the power of Maldivian herbs with various massage techniques to help you recover from jetlag symptoms. It also helps treat muscle stiffness, swelling, neck and back pain and ‘heavy legs syndrome’.
The thamburu leaves are made into a paste and applied to your back. This plant has powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic action, which helps with muscle inflammation and pain. The massage techniques focus on releasing muscle tension and reducing swelling.
‘Masgulha Filuva Beys’
The ‘Masgulha Filuva Beys’ is a 90-minute treatment aimed at stimulating an extremely deep muscle relaxation. The massage oil is homemade and infused with local spices such as fonithoshi, mirus, aseymirus and karanfoo.
These ingredients are all known for their strong anti-inflammatory and warming effects which help support muscle recovery. It’s the perfect treatment for very active people and professional athletes.
The massage pressure is deep and the spa therapist makes use of tools sourced directly from the island. Asmooth bamboo cane is rolled over the skin to deepen the pressure and glossy ‘iloshi’ (palm leaves) are used to stroke the body, for a deep calming effect on the nervous system.
